Negative Review Gets Gamespot Editor Fired?

I’m sure most of you heard about the rumor of Jeff Gerstmann, Gamespot.com editor, getting canned for giving a negative review of Eidos’ Kane and Lynch: Dead Men. Eidos paid Gamespot and parent company CNET to promote the game through Gamespot.com, fueling rumors that the 6/10 score Gerstmann gave Kane and Lynch resulted in him being fired.

Joystiq.com has confirmed that Gerstmann did get fired, but the reason why is still uncertain. If Gerstmann was fired because of his review, this is a sad day for video game journalism. Gamespot is known for being one of the more “fair” game review sites out their, but this makes you wonder what reviews are legit and which ones are “paid” for. It also got me thinking about the state of video game journalism today and where its headed. Here’s a never-before-seen interview I did with Tommy Tallarico (game audio guru, game journalist and co-creator of Video Games Live), where he talks about this very topic. His response to the question is an interesting one.

Update: According to Joystiq.com, Gamespot has denied Eidos pressured the firing of Gerstmann over his review of Kane and Lynch.

Hey, my name’s Geoff, owner of FreezeCracker.com. I found your site through this video. I posted it on my Destructoid c-blog and tried getting them to post it on the front page but they said it was a bit iffy. D: Ah well.

Well, I really enjoy your site! I just saw your Halo 3 review and I like how you’re positive, just like what Tommy was looking for. I’m definitely coming back. :) Keep up with your good work.
